Bright Summer Flowers: Dahlia, Tithonia, Rose, Marigold and Salvia

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The dahlias are still putting out nice sized flowers and this pink one is a favorite.

I think some of our tithonia plants (also called Mexican sunflowers) are over six feet tall. The butterflies and bees love them and I occasionally even see a hummingbird visit them. They are especially precious to me because I started them from seed.

These creamy knockout roses smell like a mixture of honey and lemon.

I love the contrast between the giant yellow marigolds and the blue salvia. You can also see some red zinnias in the background.

Because this pretty butterfly was kind enough to open its wings for a photo I thought it deserved to be included in today's post.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Red, White and Blue Flowers and Haiku Poem for 9/11

Giant red zinnia flower: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
May God bless America and you too, dear friend.

It's September 11th and I don't feel right with my usual start to my floral Friday/this week in my Maryland garden post. But I do have a little haiku poem and some red, white and blue flower photos to share. Every day, I pray for our country and for God to thwart terrorists' plans. My heart aches for all those who lost loved ones in terrorist attacks. May God heal their hearts, comfort their pains and light their paths.

Haiku Poem for September 11th
Nine one one... somber
day of reflection, mourning,
remembrance, prayer.

As heavy as my heart is, I still love flowers. And I'm thankful to have these red, white and blue ones to share with you.

The red salvia just started blooming this week. Perfect timing.

Someone mentioned how they like these "blue" Mexican bush sage flowers so I thought I'd include them here. Their petals are super soft, like pussy willows. I've loved them for a long time but this is the first year I've grown them.

Whatever is happening in your heart, mind and soul today, I pray that God will give you just what you need and bless you, America, and comfort all those who mourn.

Rose, Zinnia, Dahlia, Salvia and Obedient Plant Flowers

Rose with sparkly dewdrops: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The roses look especially nice with dew or raindrops on their velvety petals.

The zinnias are doing great and I think this little pink one with light green petals around the center is especially cute.

Dahlia production has slowed so they probably need fertilizer but this pretty yellow and red bicolor dahlia still has a few blooms.

This week our blue hummingbird-attracting salvia started blooming. I haven't seen a hummingbird on it yet but we have a few that visit our feeders and I hope they notice these flowers too.

The obedient plants are blooming nicely and often are covered in bees and a scattering of butterflies.

It's a pretty time of the year for Maryland flower gardening and I do love our flowers. Hope you enjoy this week's photos! May God bless you!

Chrysanthemum, Rose and Butterfly Plant Photos from Missy's Garden for Floral Friday

This week I had the pleasure of a visit with my friend Missy and she kindly gave me a tour of her yard and let me take some photos of her lovely flowers. She had a wonderful assortment of chrysanthemums. Not on ly the bicolor yellow/rust ones pictured above and the red ones pictured below but also pink, maroon, yellow, orange and more different colors of chrysanthemums spread throughout her gardens.

Here is one of Missy's large pink roses. She has a another bush with flowers almost twice as big too.

Missy described this as a butterfly plant and this moth hopped right onto the flower right afterward. I liked the contrast of the white moth and purple flowers.

I liked the yellow eye of this red chrysanthemum. Hope you enjoyed this floral Friday photo slideshow. Thank you to Missy for opening her yard to me and my camera! May God bless Missy and may He bless you too!
