Our First Cherry Tree - Year Two Blossoms

Cherry blossom macro: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I love cherry blossoms and am blessed and thrilled to have my own cherry tree. This is its second year in our yard and, by God's grace, it is thriving.

The cherry blossom flowers don't last very long but they are an excellent reminder to cherish every moment of our lives.

The first two photos in this post were taken on an overcast day and the second on a bright sunny day. They were also taken from opposite sides of the tree.

This year the tree is finally big enough for an overview shot. I had to crop it a bit to keep my neighbors' privacy but you can get a feel for the size of the tree. It is growing but it has a ways to go to reach full size. I hope it provides our friends, bees and birds many years of delight.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you and keep you this springtime and always!

Happy floral Friday! This week in my Maryland garden we have our very first cherry blossoms on a tree planted in our yard last year.

I took these photos just yesterday and the tree is already starting to leaf out today. Cherry blossom season is wonderful but fleeting.

I love their pretty petals so it's really something special to have our own little tree.

Thank you for visiting! I hope you enjoyed my cherry blossom photos. If I feel energetic I'll sort through the hundreds (perhaps over a thousand) of cherry blossom photos my husband and I took last weekend around the Washington D.C. tidal basin and share the best with you in an upcoming post. But I'll post links from previous years' photos in case you'd like to see some right away.

May God bless you and fill your heart with His peace, love and joy!

Cherry Blossom Pom Pom Flower Photos & Haiku Poem

The Kanzan cherry trees are in full bloom here in Maryland. I love their pom pom like flowers and late bloom time, which extends the joy of cherry blossom season.
These lovely flowering cherry trees inspired me to write this haiku poem:

Kanzan Cherry Blossoms Haiku
Fat cherry blossoms
fill the sky with loveliness.
Pink double bloomers.
I cropped out some houses but you can still see how lovely the trees are lined up along the street.
I'm not sure what kind of cherry tree is pictured above but I loved the flowers. They are large and pink like the Kanzan cherry trees but flatter (more like a single bloom than a double bloom).
I hope you enjoyed viewing my Kanzan cherry blossom photos. Happiest spring wishes to you, dear friends! May God bless you and keep you!

National Day of Prayer Haikus (Short Poems)

Jefferson Memorial Cherry Blossoms: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, April 2013
Today is the National Day of Prayer and my writing for the challenge resulted in two linked haikus related to the event. It was really neat to watch the activities broadcast live on the internet. Please join me in praying for our nation, leaders, military service members, veterans, families, the homeless, jobless, suffering and whatever else God lays on your heart.

National Day of Prayer Haikus

Praising God today
Lifting up America
in prayer for healing

For peace and kindness
For living the golden rule
For revival now.

May God bless America and may He bless you too!

Cherry Blossoms and National Monuments at Washington DC Tidal Basin

Washington Monument Cherry Blossoms: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, April 2013
Today my fabulous friend Pam took me to see the beautiful cherry blossoms at the Washington D.C. Tidal Basin. It looked like the blooms were at peak or near peak (the peak bloom period was originally projected for March but the date has been moved back at least twice since then due to our unusually cool weather). The Washington Monument (above) has scaffolding all round the bottom of it but it's hidden by the blooming cherry trees.

Cherry blossom season is my absolute favorite time of the year in the Washington DC and Baltimore metropolitan area. Being able to view the Tidal Basin blooms near peak on a beautiful blue sky day with a dear friend is a special treat.

What is your favorite time of the year? What is your favorite flower? What is special or do you particularly enjoy about where you live?

Cherry Blossom Dog

Photograph by Ben Wheeler
Turns out my husband was disappointed that I didn't post his cherry blossom dog photographs so, not being one to disappoint my husband, and in hopes that you'll get a big smile (fitting in with the joy part of my blog's theme), here you go. He shot these pictures near the Tidal Basin in Washington DC, close to where the Cherry Blossom Festival is held. It appears that the dog's tail was actually dyed pink; however, the dog didn't seem to mind and was happily prancing down the sidewalk. Not knowing the dog's actual name, I call it the Cherry Blossom Dog because its tail matches some of the more pink blooms. I loved that its leash was also pink. Of course, I love pink anyway.

Hope you enjoyed my beloved's Cherry Blossom Dog photos. May God bless you and keep you this spring and always, dear friends!

Washington DC Cherry Blossoms and Monuments Photos

Jefferson Memorial Photo by Phyllis Wheeler
The Washington DC Tidal Basin cherry blossoms are beautiful and appearing very early this year. My beloved husband and I enjoyed a visit yesterday. The skies were overcast but we hope to visit again on a sunnier day and get better photos. Just in case we don't I thought I'd share these.

If you live within driving distance it's really a great treat to see this area in full bloom. The National Park Service coordinates parking and even offers a shuttle from some of the more distant areas so people don't have to walk for an hour just to get to the Tidal Basin area but even the parking area is filled with blooming cherry trees so it's not a bad way to pass the time (walking amidst the trees to get to the main attraction) if you're healthy and fit.

My husband caught a rare glimpse of blue sky in this photo. Today would be a perfect day for viewing the blooms as the skies are a beautiful blue but Ben is working and the housework won't do itself. I still got to enjoy some cherry blossoms in my own neighborhood though and that was a nice treat. May God bless you and may you enjoy the fruits of His handiwork!
