Rain Drenched Flowers and a Squirrely Surprise

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" We've had a lot of rain but that's good for the flowers. The bright reddish orange and yellow bicolor dahlia pictured above is a new addition to our garden and I love it.

We planted the hot pink bicolor dahlia outside and I hope it survives the current cold snap.

The window box dianthus is thriving and I thought it looked neat with the raindrops on its petals.

Another new addition to my garden is this white rose-like impatiens. The red in the background is my mini Japanese maple seedling garden. For now, they're sharing the window box. I'm hoping enough survive to make some bonsais for inside and grow a few in pots for outside. The one I started in 2012 made it through a few winters but is no longer with us so this time I wanted extra plants, just in case.

On a rare sunny day this squirrel kept running in front of our hellebore and azalea bushes and I finally got a photo. She's a fast one. I think she likes making my cat's head go back and forth (my cat watches from the window).

Hellebores, Primroses, Periwinkle and a Cherry Blossom Wreath

Happy floral Friday and welcome to the first "this week in my Maryland garden" post for 2016! This is the first week I've had enough flowers in the yard for posting. The hellebores have been blooming for a while but until this week they've been the only flowers in our yard. Most hellebore flowers droop downwards. I propped this one up with a lilac branch so you can see the pretty hellebore face.

The first primroses of 2016 are blooming. Just two so far but more have buds.

Pretty purple-blue periwinkle (also called vinca) is also popping up here and there.

Here's an artsy take on the burgundy hellebore flower.

These are artificial flowers but they remind me of spring and I love cherry blossoms. It's my favorite front door wreath so far. Sorry it's through the screen door but you get the general idea.

First Flowers of Spring and Floral Friday Post of 2015

Happy floral Friday and spring! Spring is my favorite season and I'm so glad it's here. I hope you enjoy this first of my 2015 "this week in my Maryland garden" posts.

Thank you to those who have continued to ask for flower photos. It's great to finally have fresh flowers to share again and it sure is nice to see them blooming in our yard. The crocuses are our first blooming bulbs. I love the vibrant purple in the ones pictured above.

The hellebores are our first blooming perennials. The burgundy are my favorite but the white (two photos down) are really pretty too.

Most of the pansies did survive the winter, although they are not as robust looking as they could be. They will probably perk back up once the frosts are over, although that could be later than usual this year. It has certainly felt like a colder than average winter.

I like the red freckles on the inside of the white hellebore plants.

The first pansy in this post (above) was planted in the ground. This purple pansy was in our deck box. The deck box pansies don't look near as healthy as the ones in the ground but I hope they'll perk back up too.

Tulips, Daisies and More Flower Photos: This Week in My Maryland Yard

This is our first orange Angelique tulip. It makes me smile just to look at it. I took the photographs for this week's photographic flower tour of our Maryland garden. yesterday. Let's take a look at the prettiest blooms of the week.

Here you can see the orange tulip contrasting with its pink counterpart. Tulips are blooming all over the Mid Atlantic region this week.

A white African daisy with touches of purple in it's petals and a nice lavender/violet center.

The hellebores (also called Lenten roses) are still blooming.

The ajuga, both in the grass and the transplanted ones, are blooming. The transplanted ones are smaller and have smaller flowers but by next year should look healthier as they won't be competing with the grass for nutrients.

Thanks to those who have commented on the blog and in person about saving the violets! Ben still thinks they're weeds but now sees that I'm not alone in appreciating them. Turns out we'll be loosing a lot more than violets from our garden this week. I'm sad to say that most of our front flower bed will be victimized by a backhoe tomorrow. Although repair work from the November flood is not yet complete, we have even more serious plumbing challenges now so the garden will be taking a back seat to managing these new trials. Prayer appreciated.

Pink, Yellow and White Blooms: This Week in My Maryland Yard

I started a This Week in My Maryland Yard tradition last year on a different website. Now that I have my own blog it seems right to share my flowers with you here. I hope you enjoy them. It's early in the growing season but a quick walk around my yard showed definite signs of spring. The first primrose blooms of the year light up a shady area, daffodils brighten up the curb and hellebores (also known as Lenten roses) bring color underneath our largest lilac and rose of Sharon bushes. Spring is such a joyful time. I feel like God is showering us with his artistic love when viewing the beautiful blooms. May you feel His loving presence in your heart today!

Blooming Hellebores

Today I noticed that our hellebores were blooming so of course I had to take a few photographs. Only two of our six or so hellebore plants are in bloom at the moment but it was a nice sight for January in Maryland. Normally when I first notice flowers on the hellebores there's snow on the ground but today we had spring like temperatures and blue skies that melted away this weekend's snow.
