First Daffodils, Periwinkle and Forsythia Flowers of the Year

Yellow daffodil flower and bud: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2017
Happy March, floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The spring flowers started extra early this year. But it's not truly spring yet and God reminded me of this by sprinkling snowflakes on my camera as I took these photos earlier today.
Yellow forsythia flowers: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2017
We only have one remaining forsythia bush but its sunny yellow flowers brighten up a shady corner of the yard.
Pretty periwinkle flower and buds: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2017
The purplish blue periwinkle flowers (also called vinca) are popping up all over. I think periwinkle is my favorite ground cover. It spreads nicely and squelches weeds but still lets my larger perennials grow through. Last year I planted some under one of our rose bushes and I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out later this year.
Sunny daffodils: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2017
This daffodil has an unusual shape but I thought it was still pretty.
Tulip foliage: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2017
It'll be a while before it flowers but I was happy to see tulip foliage popping up through the mulch this week too.

Although I didn't get any photos this week, the hellebores are blooming too and you can see them here.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Giant Dahlia, Echinacea, Dianthus, Vinca and Zinnia Flowers

Dinnerplate dahlia flower macro: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Our pale yellow dinnerplate dahlia started blooming. I love the giant flowers (this one is about 7" wide).
Purple coneflowers, different stages: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
The echinacea (purple conflower) plants are still putting out a few fresh flowers, although the majority have faded.
Perky pink dianthus: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
This dianthus is doing the best of all if its kind in my garden. It's the only one in part shade (the rest are in full sun, which I think is what their tag said they prefer, but clearly mine like some shade).
Bicolor vinca with dew drops: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
The vinca flowers continue to bloom nicely. I liked the glistening dew drops on this one.
Big pink zinnias: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
The zinnias are the star of the garden this year, partly because I planted so many and partly because the birds, butterflies and bees love them.

Thank you for visiting! I hope this finds you safe and cool, despite the summer heat. May God bless and keep you!

Lavender, Spirea, Double Day Lily, Mexican Blanket Flower and Vinca for Floral Friday

Lavender garden: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy July, floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The bees love our lavender. I have five hardy lavender plants in this bed and think of it as my mini lavender field.
Hot pink spirea: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Our spirea bush has been in a medium pot for years and the roots have grown through the drain holes into the soil so we decided to leave it in the pot.
Double orange day lily: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
The double flowering orange day lilies started blooming this week and I think they might be our most vigorous day lilies, growing larger clumps and spreading more each year.
Red Mexican blanket flower: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
I thought our red Mexican blanket flower didn't make it through the winter but was pleasantly surprised to see its leaves appear a few weeks ago and its flowering start this week.
Deep rose and white vinca flower: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
The vinca is holding up nicely in the heat. It's a lovely time for a Maryland flower garden.

Thank you for visiting! That's all for this week's mini garden tour. May God bless you!

Hellebores, Primroses, Periwinkle and a Cherry Blossom Wreath

Burgundy hellebore with lilac buds: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy floral Friday and welcome to the first "this week in my Maryland garden" post for 2016! This is the first week I've had enough flowers in the yard for posting. The hellebores have been blooming for a while but until this week they've been the only flowers in our yard. Most hellebore flowers droop downwards. I propped this one up with a lilac branch so you can see the pretty hellebore face.
Pretty primroses: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
The first primroses of 2016 are blooming. Just two so far but more have buds.
Bluish purple periwinkle: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Pretty purple-blue periwinkle (also called vinca) is also popping up here and there.
Hellebore close up photo: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Here's an artsy take on the burgundy hellebore flower.
Cherry blossom wreath: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
These are artificial flowers but they remind me of spring and I love cherry blossoms. It's my favorite front door wreath so far. Sorry it's through the screen door but you get the general idea.

Happy almost spring! Thank you for visiting! May God bless you this season and always!

Dahlia with Skipper, Unusual Zinnias, Vinca and Dill

Skipper moth on bicolor dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" It's been hot and we've lost some plants but overall the flowers are doing great despite the heat.
Pink puffy zinnia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
I love these puffy, pom pom type zinnias and this pink one is my favorite of the bunch.
Bicolor vinca flower and bud: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
We've got a variety of vina flowers but this was the prettiest of the week.
Yellow dill flowers: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
In the naturalized herb garden we have this volunteer dill and I like its cheerful yellow flowers.
Giant red zinnia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
And the giant red zinnias are going strong. Some are nearly five feet tall and need staking. But it's worth the effort for their gorgeous flowers.

Thank you for joining me on this week's mini garden tour! May God bless you!

Sunflower, Day Lilies, Vinca and Mystery Flowers

Bee on sunflower: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Above is our first sunflower of the year. Bees love sunflowers and I love them both.
Orange double bloom day lilies: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Our double bloom orange day lilies started opening this week too.
El Dorado day lilies: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
As did my favorite bicolor day lilies, the El Dorado style. We originally had six of these pretty plants but are down to three (I think this was mostly because of the backhoe situation).
Bicolor vinca: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
The vincas have been blooming since we planted them but this is the first decent photo.
Yellow mystery flowers: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
And these tiny but pretty yellow flowers started blooming this week too. My dear friend Missy gave me the original plants and they spread a bit wider each year. Neither of us knows what the plant is but I think Missy said it's an herb of some kind. If you know what it is, please share.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you this summer and always!

Pretty Pansies, Periwinkle, Forsythia and a Funky Daffodil

Blue yellow pansies: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to this week in my Maryland garden! I love spring and the excitement of new flowers blooming in our yard. Granted, the pansies have been in the garden since last fall but they are definitely starting to perk up again with our spring weather.
Purple periwinkle: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
The periwinkle (also called vinca) started blooming this week and it's nice to see little flowers on the evergreen foliage. We'd grow this ground cover just for the glossy green leaves but the purple-blue blooms are a nice bonus.
Yellow forsythia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
The forsythia came into full bloom this week. Its bright yellow is like a smile from our garden.
Burgundy yellow pansy: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
I love the yellow center of this burgundy pansy.
Funky daffodil: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
And I am not sure why but I like this funky daffodil photo better sideways than right side up.

Thank you for visiting! Next week I hope to have photos of blooms on our very first cherry tree to share with you. May God bless you this spring and always!

Teddy Bear Sunflower, Black-Eyed Susan, Zinnia, Vinca and Bicolor Day Lily Photos

Black eyed Susan field Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, July 2014
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland Garden." I especially love my garden at this time of year. God has blessed me with so many flowers it's hard to choose just five for this weekly feature.  I hope you enjoy my selections. The cheery black-eyed Susans are at their peak (and they're also the Maryland state flower).
Orange zinnia: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, July 2014
This orange zinnia flower is over four inches in diameter.
Teddy bear sunflower: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, July 2014
The tiny but gorgeously fluffy teddy bear sunflower blooms are adorable.
Bicolor day lily: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, July 2014
The day lilies are still going strong. We have early, mid and late season bloomers so it keeps the day lily area full of flowers for a nice part of the summer.
Red vinca: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, July 2014
I love the raindrops on this red vinca. It seems to be doing fine in its hanging basket but if it starts to suffer and we have a cool day I'll probably plant it in the ground.

Thank you for joining me on this week's photo tour of my Maryland garden! May God bless, keep and encourage you!

Zinnia, Vinca, Coreopsis, Geranium and Lantana for Floral Friday

Petite bright pink zinnia: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, June 2014
Happy floral Friday! This week in my Maryland garden we've had both dry spells and heavy rain. I took these photos after a heavy rain so some of the flowers have raindrops (the rest are just drenched). This little zinnia's petals are still opening.
White vina: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, June 2014
The edges of this white vinca's petals are so wet they're nearly transparent.
Bicolor coreopsis: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, June 2014
Although this bright red and yellow coreopsis flower is quite welcome, it was a bit of a surprise to see it blooming one one of the stems of a dark red coreopsis plant.
Hot pink geranium: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, June 2014
I overwintered my geraniums and they're quite leggy but since they're still blooming I'm hesitant to cut them back.
Kaleidoscope lantana: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, June 2014The lanta
Bees and butterflies love lantana and it's the only thing I can get to grow in the corner between the driveway and sidewalk. The soil there dries out faster than anywhere else in our garden. Lantana truly is drought resistant once established and the butterflies and bees love it.

Thank you for joining me on this week's mini photo tour of my Maryland garden! May the God who created all the beautiful flowers bless and keep you!
