Rain Drenched Flowers and a Squirrely Surprise

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" We've had a lot of rain but that's good for the flowers. The bright reddish orange and yellow bicolor dahlia pictured above is a new addition to our garden and I love it.

We planted the hot pink bicolor dahlia outside and I hope it survives the current cold snap.

The window box dianthus is thriving and I thought it looked neat with the raindrops on its petals.

Another new addition to my garden is this white rose-like impatiens. The red in the background is my mini Japanese maple seedling garden. For now, they're sharing the window box. I'm hoping enough survive to make some bonsais for inside and grow a few in pots for outside. The one I started in 2012 made it through a few winters but is no longer with us so this time I wanted extra plants, just in case.

On a rare sunny day this squirrel kept running in front of our hellebore and azalea bushes and I finally got a photo. She's a fast one. I think she likes making my cat's head go back and forth (my cat watches from the window).

That's all for this week's mini garden tour. I hope my flower photos make  you smile.

Which was your favorite? What is spring like in your area?

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Black Squirrel Close Up Photos

Black squirrel on fence: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy wild Wednesday! This female black squirrel let me get fairly close to her and didn't run away even when my camera beeped and all the other wild squirrels fled.

It was a real treat to have plenty of time to photograph her.

Wildlife is rarely this cooperative so I'm guessing someone feeds her.

This black squirrel, I'm pretty sure, is different from the one I posted a few weeks ago

I found her in a different neighborhood and she's certainly more friendly.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Black Squirrel Photos & Haiku Poem

Black squirrel on fence: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy wild Wednesday! I was on my walk today, wondering what to share for today's post when I spied this pretty black squirrel foraging in a suburban Maryland yard. She even inspired me to write a little poem in her honor when I got home:

 Black Squirrel Haiku Poem:
Skittish black squirrel
entertained me with jumping
running, and hiding

This was the last shot I got before she hid behind the solid fence and scampered off (I could her her rustling the leaves).

This was one of the first shots I got of her. She definitely noticed me taking my camera out.

And here's an overview of where I first spotted her foraging. It's fun to photograph local wildlife. I have a family member who wishes to remain anonymous but loves black squirrels. This post is in his honor. I love you!

There's a white squirrel in this neighborhood too but it's always been to fast for me to photograph. Perhaps 2016 is the year I'll catch him.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you in every way!

Maryland Snowstorm Photos

Post snowstorm streets: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Yesterday's heavy snowfall left almost a foot of snow on the ground in my part of Maryland. While it hadn't risen above freezing when I took the sunny photos in this post, the sun was strong enough to start melting things. I hope you enjoy these snapshots from during and after the storm and pray that wherever you are, God keeps you safe and warm.

These are the same hollies but the photo was taken later in the day as it started to get dark.

The squirrels seemed to hide during the worst of the storm but definitely took advantage of today's sunshine to raid the bird feeders. I'm planning a follow up post of post snowstorm bird photos so be sure to come back soon to see them.

May God bless you and those you love!
