Blizzard Birds for Wild Wednesday

Happy wild Wednesday! As promised in Saturday's post, here are more bird pictures from during the blizzard. While you can't see the snow in the top photo, it's my favorite because of how soft the golden finch's feathers look.

All of the photos in today's post were taken through windows. I wish I could have gotten a better angle so you could see the dark eyed junco's eyes better but they were as dark as his head feathers.

This is another dark eyed junco. I lightened the picture considerably so you could see its eyes. I like that she has a seed in her beak.

I think this is a Carolina wren. He's got snow all over his beak from pecking at the fallen seeds.

I'm glad the birds were quick to eat the fallen seeds because the snow fell so fast that they were quickly buried. We feel blessed to be able to feed our feathered friends year round but especially during harsh weather conditions.

The plows are still working on the roads but life seems to be getting back to normal here in Maryland. We were really blessed to retain our power throughout the storm. It went out for a little bit today but it's back on and I'm thankful for that too.

My Maryland Blizzard Photos

By God's grace, we still have power and I am very thankful. I pray it will continue and pray for all those who don't have power and/or are out in this storm, as well as for the emergency workers. May God bless and protect them.

During lighter snowfall the birds flock to the feeders and gobble up the fallen seed. In order to get the photo above I had to sit on the floor and aim my camera through the little open area near the bottom of the sliding glass door (see photo below).

This door is set about eight inches above the ground so that gives you an idea of the amount of snow; though the drifts are much higher.

The birds managed to push off big piles of snow to access the feeders.

Visibility worsens as the winds increase, blowing snow into the screens and all over. I haven't ventured outside at all today so these photos were taken through our Maryland home windows.

Beautiful Birds in Snowy Maryland

As promised in my last snowstorm related post, here are the best of my bird photos from the day after that heavy snowfall. I've had requests to renew my "Wild Wednesday" posts so decided to start today. Thank you to everyone who visits my blog and encourages my writing and photography! I appreciate your comments and support!

The yellow finch in the image above was leery of my camera pointing at it from the window but settled in and resumed feeding after a few seconds.

I think this is a "junco" though I'm not sure which type. They visit frequently but tend to feed more on the ground droppings from the bird feeders than up on the feeders themselves so I don't get many pictures of them. Perhaps that's why I especially liked this one.

These mourning doves truly stick together. Sometimes I suspect they see this bird feeder as their nest because they spend so much time in it.

This suet cake feeder was really close to the window and it took quite a while for the woodpecker to let me raise the camera. The birds don't seem to mind me at the window (or even my cat!) but they don't like the camera.

The titmouse was the most suspicious and toughest to photograph of the birds featured in this Maryland snow blog post so even though it's a tad blurry I love that I caught him at all and especially with the fat seed in his mouth.

Maryland Snowstorm Photos

Yesterday's heavy snowfall left almost a foot of snow on the ground in my part of Maryland. While it hadn't risen above freezing when I took the sunny photos in this post, the sun was strong enough to start melting things. I hope you enjoy these snapshots from during and after the storm and pray that wherever you are, God keeps you safe and warm.

The icicles on this majestic pine tree were even prettier in person.

This giant holly hedge was starting to sag under the weight of the snow during the storm.

These are the same hollies but the photo was taken later in the day as it started to get dark.

The squirrels seemed to hide during the worst of the storm but definitely took advantage of today's sunshine to raid the bird feeders. I'm planning a follow up post of post snowstorm bird photos so be sure to come back soon to see them.

Snowy Morning in Maryland

I took these photos a snowstorm or two ago but figure better late than never with the posting. I hope to post some zoo and flower photos to brighten your winter over the next few weeks too. Above is one of our bushes covered in snow and glowing with soft morning light.

I think this is our variegated mondo grass. It looks nicer covered in snow than without the snow. I love how things look purer and more graceful when covered with fresh snow.

These four birds took turns feeding and watching for predators. Their activity knocked the snow off of the top of the feeder but it's still piled on top of the seeds inside the feeder.
