Lily & Iris Bouquet for Floral Friday

Happy floral Friday! My dear husband gave me these beautiful flowers and I thought sharing them here would be a good way to preserve the memory and hopefully bring a smile to your face.

This super close up of a white lily was my favorite photo of the session.

But I love the yellow and white accents on the blue irises.

From the angle above you can see more of the blue irises.

And this is an overall shot of the bouquet. The flowers have passed but thanks to photography, they live on in images. Hearty thanks to my husband for the flowers and to you for visiting!

Raindrops on Irises, Roses, Dahlias and Primroses

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Last week I mentioned that my yellow irises would be blooming soon and, by God's grace, they are now. They're my favorite both because of their color and their lovely scent. I think they look even nicer with raindrops too.

Our rose bushes are full of flowers. I love the heavy bloom when they first start out for the year but appreciate that the roses will continue to produce flowers through fall.

The dahlia tubers that we planted aren't near blooming yet so hubby kindly bought me three smaller dahlias (yellow and sunset shown in this post and burgundy/deep red perhaps in a future post).

The primroses started blooming too. I love their deep pink veins.

This is the sunset dahlia I mentioned above. These flowers are just starting to open.

Irises, Pansies, Begonias and a Rose with Tiny Bees

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The irises and roses have started blooming and I think they look especially pretty with raindrops on their petals.

Most of my neighbors have already pulled up their pansies but as long as they look great we're letting ours stay. I did plant other flowers in between the rows of pansies though so once they start to fade there will already be established plants in their area.

This pale yellow rose, which I think is a knockout rose, smells lovely and the bees (even the teeny tiny ones in the photo above) seem more drawn to it than our other roses. It was also the first to start blooming this year.

These deep purple/blue irises smell lovely too. The only iris we have that smells nicer is our giant yellow and that one's just starting to bud. Maybe next week I'll have a yellow iris photo to share.

This is my first ever nonstop begonia. The largest flower is almost four inches across. I wish I'd asked the nursery worker what they used for fertilizer because the new blooms coming in are much smaller. But they're still a lovely yellow which brightens up a shady corner of our side yard, which I appreciate. That's all for this week's post. Yellow, Blue, Purple and White Irises from My Garden

Here's the special iris flower photo post I promised in yesterday's Floral Friday feature. The yellow irises are my favorite (both because of their color and sweet scent) but I like all of our irises.

I think of these as blue irises but my visitors have proclaimed them both purple and violet.

We have just a few of these neat multicolored irises. We have a few that have the reversed colors (primarily purple-blue with hints of white and yellow) but their brief bloom time passed without a photo this year.

The white irises are the first to bloom in my Maryland garden. This picture was taken on May 9th but the rest were taken this week.

Multicolored Blooms: This Week in My Maryland Garden

If you follow my blog you know I love flowers. I just snapped this rose photo minutes before this blog post. It's such a joy to view God's handiwork in the garden!

This week our honeysuckle vines started blooming. Love the sweet fragrance of honeysuckle!

This week our yellow irises started blooming too. Most of our irises don't have a scent that we can detect but the yellow ones smell sweet and delicious, kind of like honey. Here you can see a ladybug perched on the yellow petals. I think I took this photo and the ones below yesterday afternoon.

My husband planted three flats of marigolds in the front yard and it's brightened things up quite a bit. Should look even nicer once they fill out. Soon the zinnia seedlings will join them and, God willing, the bed closest to the street will be full again.

I'm not sure if this plant just hadn't bloomed before (it was previously buried in a clump of grass, courtesy of previous residents) or if it's one of our regular blue irises that mutated to include the nice white variegation. Either way, it was a nice surprise.

Columbines, Widow's Tears, Irises & More: This Week in My Maryland Garden

Happy May dear readers! Here is our first columbine bloom of the year. I think it's a McKanna's Giant Columbine that reseeded from one of our original plants.

The Widow's Tears are in full bloom. We used to have both white and blue flowers but so far just white are blooming this year.

Last week I posted our first dark and light blue iris blooms of the year and now you can see we have a whole lot of irises blooming (and we still have a whole lot sitting in pots and buckets to be replanted from the excavation too).

This is our first rose off of our bicolor big rose. I don't remember the real name so I think of it as my strawberries and cream rose.

I think this is the same tulip I posted about last week and it's still quite lovely.

Some of the birds have been poking at our seedling pots but these cosmos seedlings that Ben started back in March are still looking good. I really should divide them or thin them soon. There's so much to do in the garden and only so much time to do it all. My plan for the cosmos was to put them in big pots so when they get tall they'll block an unsightly view from one of our windows but the county has a contractor who's had a bunch of equipment parked near our house for months now and we might just plant them on the street side to block the equipment view instead. Of course if enough of the seedlings survive we could do both.

Fresh Spring Flowers: This Week in My Maryland Yard

Spring is my favorite time of the year and this has been an exceptionally great week for flower gardening. I took this picture of our first iris bloom of 2012 two days ago just after a rain. God willing, we'll have blue, purple and yellow irises following in the next few weeks.

A walk around the yard this morning revealed our first azalea bloom of 2012. You can see a bunch of buds promising more flowers soon. This bush is on our sunny side yard. We have three azaleas in our shady back yard and they have buds but no blooms yet.

I love violets but my husband thinks they're weeds. If you love violets please comment below so I can show him others appreciate them too and maybe he'll let more of them live!

Remember photo from a couple weeks ago when the bleeding heart foliage was just pushing through the ground? As you can see in the photo above, the bleeding heart plant is blooming freely now.

Our Virginia blue bells are just starting to flower.

My beloved husband may not like violets but he likes these purple African daisies because he bought three pots of them last week to brighten our front walkway.

This week hubby also purchased and planted this nifty fringe petaled gebera daisy. We still have a lot of weeding to do, mulch to lay, seeds to plant and more but I find when I focus on the beauty of the flowers (instead of all the work that still needs to be done) I enjoy our garden a lot more. The flowers God created are beautiful and they bring joy to my soul. May God bless you today and always!
