Big Fat Raindrops on Beautiful Flowers and a Surprise

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" This might be my last installment of regular garden photos for 2016 but, God willing, they'll return in the spring. For this week's post I waited and waited... and waited for a break in the rain but it didn't come so I went out and got soaked for you all. Hope my raindrop on flower photos make you smile!

If you look closely you can see big fat raindrops filling some of the little lantana flower cups.

The raindrops were so big and heavy on this rose that it was facing down toward the ground.

The dahlia was sturdy enough to support the heavy raindrops.

The tiny little bug on this yellow cosmos was a pleasant surprise to me. I didn't even notice it until I downloaded the photos.

Bright Summer Flowers: Dahlia, Tithonia, Rose, Marigold and Salvia

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The dahlias are still putting out nice sized flowers and this pink one is a favorite.

I think some of our tithonia plants (also called Mexican sunflowers) are over six feet tall. The butterflies and bees love them and I occasionally even see a hummingbird visit them. They are especially precious to me because I started them from seed.

These creamy knockout roses smell like a mixture of honey and lemon.

I love the contrast between the giant yellow marigolds and the blue salvia. You can also see some red zinnias in the background.

Because this pretty butterfly was kind enough to open its wings for a photo I thought it deserved to be included in today's post.

Summer Flowers for Shade and Sun

Happy August, floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The pretty white impatiens flowers are brightening a shady area.

This hosta blooms even in our deepest shade.

This patch of black eyed Susan flowers blooms even under the shady canopy of several trees. It only gets a little filtered light but I think there are just as many blooms as our other black eyed Susan plants in full sun.

This yellow coreopsis is a volunteer baby of our red coreopsis and thrives in our hottest, full sun flower bed.

This obedient plant is blooming in full sun but we also have some in shady areas that bloom, although not as profusely.

This tiny bicolor fairy marigold is blooming in part sun.

It's fun to have flowers for both shady and sunny areas. Which is your favorite?

Red Coreopsis, Purple Coneflowers, Yellow Day Lilies, Sunflowers and Fairy Marigolds

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The red coreopsis is still blooming heavily and is often visited by bees.

The echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, is also blooming heavily. This old fashioned purple coneflower not only survived but made many volunteer babies which have now formed a mini echinacea field. I'm thrilled because Bermuda grass invaded that bed and echinacea is one of the few things strong enough to thrive with it tangled in its roots.

Last week I featured our double orange day lily but this week the bright yellow is the day lily star. My favorite thing about it is that it was a gift from some kind neighbors (they wish to remain anonymous) but I love the true yellow color too.

Last year we planted a few sunflowers but this year we didn't plant any. It was really exciting to see this volunteer sunflower develop from one of last year's mother plants. It's not in a convenient place (it's crammed in between a rose bush and some very robust oregano) but I'm letting nature take its course and just enjoying it.

Another volunteer is this teeny tiny marigold. I think of it as my fairy marigold, although I don't remember its actual name. The flowers are about the size of a dime and the foliage is feathery.

For me, one of the greatest delights in life is gardening. I love the happy surprises, watching things grow (especially from seed) and seeing nature take its course during the year. God certainly was creative and generous when He came up with so many amazing plants for our world.

Bicolor Marigold, Day Lily, Coreopsis, Golden Sundrop and Gladiola Flowers

Happy Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I took these photos just after a heavy rain and the flowers almost seemed to glow. The marigolds are starting to fill out nicely and I love the color combo of the bicolor red/orange and gold marigold in the top photo.

Our El Dorado day lilies started blooming this week. I love their deep red detailing.

The red coreopsis featured last week has new blooms but the older ones' petals are fading to white. I like how they look both ways. If I stay on top of deadheading the spent flowers we can have blooms through frost on these amazing plants.

The golden sundrops are already providing food and entertainment for our native golden finches. The birds love the seedy centers of these pretty flowers.

Last year's gladiola photo was nicer but I wanted to include this one to mark their first week blooming in our Maryland garden this year. The sweet peas and echinacea are starting to crowd them out so I was pleasantly surprised to see the gladiola flowers.

Funky Lavender, Thyme, Allium, Marigold and Dahlia Photos for Floral Friday

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" My wonderful husband bought this Spanish lavender a few weeks ago and it's almost finished blooming so I'm thankful to have a photo of its first year in our yard.

I planted this French thyme last year and it's nice to see it covered in little white flowers.

This giant allium flower is a little miracle. We bought the bulbs last fall but each thought the other planted them. So when I found them in late winter/early spring I took a chance and planted them. Voles ate two of the three that should be blooming now but one survived and I am thankful. We have three more that are supposed to bloom in early summer.

The marigolds are growing and I love this bicolor red/orange marigold.

This is a funky shot of our bicolor dahlia. I love how the petals are shaped.

Rain Drenched Chrysanthemum, Marigold, Echinacea and Zinnia Flowers

Happy October, happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The golden chrysanthemums look nicer this week and seem to glisten in the rain and glow in the sun.

The French marigolds grown from seed seem to be doing the best of all the marigolds we planted this year. I especially love the bicolor ones.

The white zinnias seem to be wrapping up so I was glad to get one last fresh photo for you.

And I was pleasantly surprised to see a late blooming echinacea (aka purple coneflower). Most of the larger plants have already set seed. I like to leave the seeds up for the birds for winter feeding.

The yellow zinnias are still going strong and I hope to see more fresh flowers through frost.

Dahlia, Marigolds, Zinnia, Butterfly Bush and Friend

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" It's been really hot but the flowers are still going strong, and I'm thankful.

I love these bicolor French marigolds that I grew from seed. They are getting so large I might have to stake some of them.

I've already had to stake a bunch of the giant zinnias (also grown from seed) and some of the plants are so tall they reach my shoulders. In the photo above you can see a giant bright pink zinnia just opening up and, in the background, a light pink that is fully open. I often see golden finches, butterflies, moths and bees enjoying the giant zinnias.

This is another potted butterfly bush (I featured a white one last week). I love the bright orange centers and the lilac colored petals. We do plan to put them in the ground once things start cooling down so they have time to establish deeper roots before winter.

Some of the African marigolds (also grown from seed) have grown nearly as tall as the giant zinnias. It's really exciting to see so many pretty flowers on plants I grew from seed. I love all flowers but the ones grown from seed are extra special.

Shasta Daisies, Coreopsis, Sweet Peas, Marigold and Echinacea Flowers

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The heat and humidity are back but the flowers still look happy. This week brought our first shasta daisy blooms of the year.

And also our first red coreopsis blooms. When we bought these plants they were pure red flowers. But as time goes by little bits of two of the plants produce orange and red bicolor flowers. I like them both but think it's interesting that they come from the same plant.

Our sweet peas have started blooming too. I waited too late to train them up a trellis so they're sprawling all over the place.

I love the French marigolds, possibly even more so because I started them from seed. It's exciting to see the first blooms in these easy to grow flowers.

The bees love the purple coneflowers (also known as echinacea). This flower is about the size of my palm so you can imagine how tiny the bee is.
