Summer Flowers for Shade and Sun

Happy August, floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The pretty white impatiens flowers are brightening a shady area.

This hosta blooms even in our deepest shade.

This patch of black eyed Susan flowers blooms even under the shady canopy of several trees. It only gets a little filtered light but I think there are just as many blooms as our other black eyed Susan plants in full sun.

This yellow coreopsis is a volunteer baby of our red coreopsis and thrives in our hottest, full sun flower bed.

This obedient plant is blooming in full sun but we also have some in shady areas that bloom, although not as profusely.

This tiny bicolor fairy marigold is blooming in part sun.

It's fun to have flowers for both shady and sunny areas. Which is your favorite?

Morning Glory, Bicolor Day Lily, Magic Sunrise Dahlia, Black Eyed Susans and Unusual Zinnia

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The morning glories are blooming nicely and their white color seems cooling in the summer heat.

I love this striking deep red and bright yellow bicolor day lily.

And I'm thrilled that our magic sunrise dahlias finally started blooming this week. Can you see the bee in the upper left hand corner? The bees are happy too.

The black eyed Susans have been blooming for a few weeks but something is chewing on their petals so it's hard to find nice fresh ones for photos. But from a distance they look great.

And in the midst of our giant zinnias we have this one unusually shaped zinnia. The whole plant has this type of flower. I thought it was neat. Yesterday a visitor noticed it and said it looked "so perfect it doesn't look real." The giant zinnias are still my favorite but this is a pleasant surprise.

Teddy Bear Sunflower, Black-Eyed Susan, Zinnia, Vinca and Bicolor Day Lily Photos

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland Garden." I especially love my garden at this time of year. God has blessed me with so many flowers it's hard to choose just five for this weekly feature. I hope you enjoy my selections. The cheery black-eyed Susans are at their peak (and they're also the Maryland state flower).

This orange zinnia flower is over four inches in diameter.

The tiny but gorgeously fluffy teddy bear sunflower blooms are adorable.

The day lilies are still going strong. We have early, mid and late season bloomers so it keeps the day lily area full of flowers for a nice part of the summer.

I love the raindrops on this red vinca. It seems to be doing fine in its hanging basket but if it starts to suffer and we have a cool day I'll probably plant it in the ground.

Yellow Finch Feeding on Black Eyed Susan Flowers for Wild Wednesday

Find the yellow finch

Happy wild Wednesday everyone! I was blessed to see this yellow finch feeding on one of our black eyed Susan plants. Can you find the finch in the overview photo above? What first caught my eye was the bird's movement. It took me a bit to realize it was a bird in the blooms. Close up photos are below.
