Apricot Rose, Pink Veronica, Dahlia, Zinnia and Day Lilies for Floral Friday

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I'm loving our new apricot (light orange) rose flowers. So are the Japanese beetles but I pick them off as I see them and enjoy the flowers despite the bites taken from them.

Last year we planted bluish purple veronica in our main flower bed and it survived the winter so this year we put in some pink veronica and I think it's beautiful.

This Mr. Optimist dahlia was a great surprise because the tuber survived the winter in our raised bed. I don't think any other dahlias have ever survived the winter in my Maryland garden before. It was one of my favorites last year and I couldn't find any locally this year so it's extra nice.

This is my first giant red zinnia flower of the year. I grow them from seed so they're extra special.

The orange-yellow day lilies are blooming heavily. It's nice to have early, mid and late blooming day lilies to extend the day lily delights in our Maryland garden.

Red Coreopsis, Purple Coneflowers, Yellow Day Lilies, Sunflowers and Fairy Marigolds

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The red coreopsis is still blooming heavily and is often visited by bees.

The echinacea, also known as purple coneflower, is also blooming heavily. This old fashioned purple coneflower not only survived but made many volunteer babies which have now formed a mini echinacea field. I'm thrilled because Bermuda grass invaded that bed and echinacea is one of the few things strong enough to thrive with it tangled in its roots.

Last week I featured our double orange day lily but this week the bright yellow is the day lily star. My favorite thing about it is that it was a gift from some kind neighbors (they wish to remain anonymous) but I love the true yellow color too.

Last year we planted a few sunflowers but this year we didn't plant any. It was really exciting to see this volunteer sunflower develop from one of last year's mother plants. It's not in a convenient place (it's crammed in between a rose bush and some very robust oregano) but I'm letting nature take its course and just enjoying it.

Another volunteer is this teeny tiny marigold. I think of it as my fairy marigold, although I don't remember its actual name. The flowers are about the size of a dime and the foliage is feathery.

For me, one of the greatest delights in life is gardening. I love the happy surprises, watching things grow (especially from seed) and seeing nature take its course during the year. God certainly was creative and generous when He came up with so many amazing plants for our world.

Dahlias, Day Lilies, Butterfly Weed, and Hot Peppers

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I took these photos right after a heavy rain. Raindrops on flower petals make them even more beautiful.

These pretty ruffled day lilies have a nice bright center that's like a floral smile.

To support the monarch butterfly population, we bought three butterfly weed plants this year and they're finally blooming. I have yet to see a butterfly on them but am hopeful.

Our sights of summer dahlia was the most expensive tuber we bought this year and the last to bloom. But it's flowers are beautiful and large so worth the wait.

I started three different types of hot pepper plants from seed for my husband in late winter but once we planted them in spring, rabbits kept eating them. So he decided to get some already large ones from the store. His store bought ones are producing nicely but my seed started ones are still at the flowering stage (note to self - next year put up some rabbit fencing around the pepper seedlings). I hope the ones I started from seed do produce some peppers eventually but he's pretty glad that he bought the larger plants and can pick peppers as needed.

Vinca, Dahlia, Giant Zinnias, and Day Lily From Our Garden

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The vincas in our deck box are thriving despite the summer heat.

So far the Mr. Optimist dahlias are the only large ones blooming but others have buds so I hope to see some soon (we have three other varieties planted).

That package of "red" giant zinnia seeds has surprised us with orange, pink, white and other shades of zinnias as well.

Thankfully it did provide a handful of red zinnias too. The bees love all the colors.

Day lily season is still going strong. I love the extra bright inner shade of the yellow frilly day lilies.

Sunflower, Day Lilies, Vinca and Mystery Flowers

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Above is our first sunflower of the year. Bees love sunflowers and I love them both.

Our double bloom orange day lilies started opening this week too.

As did my favorite bicolor day lilies, the El Dorado style. We originally had six of these pretty plants but are down to three (I think this was mostly because of the backhoe situation).

The vincas have been blooming since we planted them but this is the first decent photo.

And these tiny but pretty yellow flowers started blooming this week too. My dear friend Missy gave me the original plants and they spread a bit wider each year. Neither of us knows what the plant is but I think Missy said it's an herb of some kind. If you know what it is, please share.

Day Lilies, Carnations, Pansies, Primrose & Fire Poker Lily

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Our Stella d'oro day lilies (a repeat blooming variety) have started flowering. I love that we get a big rush of blooms now and they'll trickle in through frost.

This is our first carnation ever. I planted them last spring but only two of the four plants survived. Neither bloomed last year but I'm thankful that now they are both blooming. The flowers are much smaller than florist's carnations but it's neat to have our very own.

My husband warned me that he's taking the pansies out this weekend so this is my last pansy photo until fall. I'm glad he gave me advance notice so I could get this shot with raindrops on the petals.

I'm really loving the yellow primroses (thank you, Mary!). I know I shared a photo last week but this week's has raindrops on the petals so hope you agree it's worth posting again.

Apparently it's been three years since I posted a fire poker lily photo! I believe they're also called torch lilies. My photo from three years ago was actually better (because the flowers were fresher) but I thought it'd be nice to have a new one and this is likely the last week to get a photo. All in all, it's a lovely time in my Maryland garden.

Teddy Bear Sunflower, Black-Eyed Susan, Zinnia, Vinca and Bicolor Day Lily Photos

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland Garden." I especially love my garden at this time of year. God has blessed me with so many flowers it's hard to choose just five for this weekly feature. I hope you enjoy my selections. The cheery black-eyed Susans are at their peak (and they're also the Maryland state flower).

This orange zinnia flower is over four inches in diameter.

The tiny but gorgeously fluffy teddy bear sunflower blooms are adorable.

The day lilies are still going strong. We have early, mid and late season bloomers so it keeps the day lily area full of flowers for a nice part of the summer.

I love the raindrops on this red vinca. It seems to be doing fine in its hanging basket but if it starts to suffer and we have a cool day I'll probably plant it in the ground.

Beautiful Day Lilies and a Day Lily Haiku

Day lily time has arrived in Maryland and Washington DC. I took these photos at the U.S. National Arboretum this weekend. They have a delightful day lily garden with an amazing variety of blooms. I liked the varied colors and fringing on the day lily in the photo above.

The day lilies above are giant (larger than my hand!) and colorful.

National Arboretum Day Lily Haiku

Day lilies blazing

So many colors and shapes

lighting up the field.

These neatly colored day lilies have an unusual yellow stripe through the red leaves and a faint tinge of red edging the yellow leaves.

This deep violet day lily has a gorgeous yellow center. There was also a violet day lily with a green center.

This apricot and yellow day lily has a tinge of white on the edges of the leaves and I love the ruffling. If you live in the DC area the U.S. National Arboretum's day lily garden is a wonderful sight! And if you're too far away to visit in person I hope you enjoyed this mini virtual tour.

Hydrangeas, Cosmos, Primrose and Day Lilies: This Week in My Maryland Garden

Our hydrangeas are blooming in our shady back yard this week. Hopefully the flowers will turn even more blue as they mature.

This is our first cosmos flower of the year. It's just starting to open up. I love that we started this plant from seed. It makes it even more precious.

I believe this is an evening primrose. These flowering plants are climbing up our variegated rose bush, lilacs and fence.

Here's our first regular day lily bloom of the year. It's a sweet pale yellow and I love the frilly edges. In an earlier post we showed you our Stella d'Oro reblooming day lily, which was the first of any kind to bloom this year. The rebloomers are still flowering and should continue blooming through frost this fall.

This is our variegated rose bush (the one that has the evening primrose, above, climbing up it). Every flower is slightly different and I enjoy seeing the various patterns that emerge.

Dazzling Day Lilies

My husband and I braved the heat today for a short walk in the U.S. National Arboretum and we were thrilled to find their day lily garden blooming with a nice variety of day lily flowers. It looks like this is just the beginning, so if you live in the area you should have a few weeks to enjoy the day lily show. Above is a nice red day lily with a yellow center.

Here's a pure bright yellow day lily.

A nicely contrasted day lily close up photo (macro).

Here's a rare double bloom day lily flower in a nice peach color with hints of yellow.

I wish I could have gotten a better photograph of this striking day lily. It was more striking in person. There was a couple canoodling on the grass nearby so I didn't spend much time on this photo but the flower was really beautiful.
