Bee Balm, Sedum, Sunset Dahlia, Coreopsis, and Pansy Flowers

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The pretty bee balm above started blooming this week. It's a miraculous survivor. Kind neighbors gave it to me three years ago. It bloomed just a tiny bit before something ate it down to the ground. Then last year a well meaning helper thought it was a weed and did his best to kill it. What little remained was eaten down to the ground. This year the foliage looks fantastic and the flowers are robust. Hopefully whatever ate it in previous years has moved on.

This yellow sedum is frommy kind friend Mary. Last year she let me take three tip cuttings from her beautiful plants and, by God's grace, they rooted and spread and now I have a little group of these beautiful plants. Hopefully they'll continue to spread and flower each year.

I thought the sunset dahlia had died but there's one nice flower on it and some buds forming.

The red coreopsis started blooming this week (that's a pink dahlia in the background) and they have made a few babies. Surprisingly, the babies have yellow flowers.

I found this tiny volunteer pansy plant hiding behind a bigger plant. I guess the shade from the large plant is keeping it alive despite the heat. I consider that another plant miracle.

In addition to what was already mentioned, our golden sundrops, lavender, butterfly bush (lavender and black knight) and snow on the mountain also started blooming this week. First and Last Azalea, Strawberry, Pansy, Dianthus and Tulip Flowers

Happy Earth Day, floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Our pink azaleas started blooming this week and they brighten up a very shady part of the yard.

This is probably our last Angelique tulip of the year so I might cut it and bring it indoors to savor.

Our window box dianthus survived another winter and put out its first flower this week.

I found this volunteer (spontaneously growing) blue and white pansy in a sunny garden bed.

The yellow and red tulips may be the last of the season but they are gorgeous.

The strawberries that survived the winter started blooming this week too. I received three new ones as a gift with purchase and planted those today as part of my Earth Day observance.

Angelique Tulips, Pansies & Yellow and Red Primroses

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Right now the angelique tulips are the star of the yard.

I think they look even prettier from above.

These pretty yellow pansies survived the winter in a pot. A pansy can be tough.

I love the different shades of yellow in the primrose above.

And this red primrose with yellow accents is lovely too.

Pansies, Primroses, Lilacs and an Angelique Tulip

Happy floral Friday! It's another exciting week in my Maryland garden and I hope you'll enjoy this week's flower photos! I'm thrilled that the pansies are still going strong (we planted them last fall).

The first set of primrose flowers have passed but the later bloomers are still going strong. This bright pink petaled and yellow and white centered plant is one of my favorite primroses.

The old fashioned lilacs (pictured above) are in full bloom. The dwarf rebloomers are just starting to flower but bees are enjoying both already.

We still have Angelique tulips in the front yard and they look so full that neighbors have asked if they're miniature peonies.

Pretty Pansies, Periwinkle, Forsythia and a Funky Daffodil

Happy floral Friday and welcome to this week in my Maryland garden! I love spring and the excitement of new flowers blooming in our yard. Granted, the pansies have been in the garden since last fall but they are definitely starting to perk up again with our spring weather.

The periwinkle (also called vinca) started blooming this week and it's nice to see little flowers on the evergreen foliage. We'd grow this ground cover just for the glossy green leaves but the purple-blue blooms are a nice bonus.

The forsythia came into full bloom this week. Its bright yellow is like a smile from our garden.

I love the yellow center of this burgundy pansy.

And I am not sure why but I like this funky daffodil photo better sideways than right side up.

First Flowers of Spring and Floral Friday Post of 2015

Happy floral Friday and spring! Spring is my favorite season and I'm so glad it's here. I hope you enjoy this first of my 2015 "this week in my Maryland garden" posts.

Thank you to those who have continued to ask for flower photos. It's great to finally have fresh flowers to share again and it sure is nice to see them blooming in our yard. The crocuses are our first blooming bulbs. I love the vibrant purple in the ones pictured above.

The hellebores are our first blooming perennials. The burgundy are my favorite but the white (two photos down) are really pretty too.

Most of the pansies did survive the winter, although they are not as robust looking as they could be. They will probably perk back up once the frosts are over, although that could be later than usual this year. It has certainly felt like a colder than average winter.

I like the red freckles on the inside of the white hellebore plants.

The first pansy in this post (above) was planted in the ground. This purple pansy was in our deck box. The deck box pansies don't look near as healthy as the ones in the ground but I hope they'll perk back up too.

Echinacea, Pansies, Rose Petals and a Dahlia

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden." The cooler autumn weather has killed a few of our plants but there are still spots of floral color to be found. The echinacea (purple coneflower) above is a volunteer from one of our original plants. It seems that the oldest plants bloom earliest but we're still getting new flowers from the youngest plants.

Thankfully, the pansies my husband bought earlier in the season survived the various heat waves we've had since planting. I love this blue one with white, violet and yellow accents.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this strawberries and cream rose. I thought the weeds and morning glory vines had killed the bush. I love the white edging on the petals.

The pansies not only survived but they're putting out fresh buds. Hopefully they'll continue blooming through next spring.

The dahlias are still blooming, although their flower production has slowed a bit.

Sparkling Chrysanthemums, Dahlias, Zinnia, Pansies and a Busy Bee

Happy floral Friday! I took these photos yesterday after a heavy rain. I love how the flowers sparkle and glisten in the sun when covered in raindrops. The yellow chrysanthemum above is starting to turn bronze on the edges and makes it feel more like autumn here in my Maryland garden.

But the buzzing bees make it feel like summer is still hanging in there. I love the curly petals at the center of this bicolor dahlia.

The bright yellow zinnias are a ray of sunshine, no matter what the sky is doing.

These funky petaled pink, yellow and white dahlias make me smile every time I see them. I love how the pinks go from pale to hot pink with other shades in between and all on one flower. This year I'm going to try digging up tubers again. Last year I didn't succeed so any tips from you would be greatly appreciated! Particularly on how to dig them up without piercing the tubers (which I found out the hard way aren't necessarily directly below the stalks), how long to let them air dry before storing them away for the winter and how to store them away.

My husband planted the wheelbarrow full of pansies and bought some more to fill out the triangular area they're now enjoying (previously occupied by a load of marigolds and a few pink zinnias). They were beaten down by the heavy rain and are showing the stress of being transplanted but should perk up in a few days if the weather cooperates. As I mentioned last week, when God smiles on our garden the pansies can bloom right through winter, into spring and sometimes even early summer.

You can see (from left to right) some of our coreopsis, zinnias, roses, perilla and lantana in the closer background and our and neighbors' trees and big shrubs in the far background.

A Wheelbarrow Full of Pansies for Floral Friday

As summer transitions to fall my glorious marigolds have been flagging. So my sweet husband bought me this wheelbarrow full of brightly colored pansies to replace them. It might still be too hot for pansies but he scored a good deal on them so it's worth the risk of early planting. God willing, if they survive the hotter fall days they should make it through the winter and bloom until late spring/early summer next year.

One of the blessings of Maryland flower gardening is a longer growing season than what I grew up with in New England. It still seems miraculous to me that anything will bloom through the winter snow. Miraculous and wonderful.

Each pansy is pretty in its own right but I love the little bit of white at the edges of this red and yellow pansy's petals.

And the greenish yellow center of this white and violet pansy is like an exclamation point.

I'm not sure when we'll get around to planting these wheelbarrow pansies but they look nice where they are and seem to be doing fine (he bought them last weekend) so there's no hurry. Although they'll certainly be happier in the ground.
