Angelique Tulips, Pansies & Yellow and Red Primroses

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Right now the angelique tulips are the star of the yard.

I think they look even prettier from above.

These pretty yellow pansies survived the winter in a pot. A pansy can be tough.

I love the different shades of yellow in the primrose above.

And this red primrose with yellow accents is lovely too.

Primroses, Daffodils, and Flowering Quince

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" We might get snow this weekend but it feels like spring right now. My kind husband even bought me six new primroses so we'll have more colors to bring you if they survive the upcoming frost and potential snow. I will probably cover them on nights with frost to boost their chances of survival.

This week brings our first daffodils of the year. I love their bright yellow flowers.

The bright fushia primrose, featured last week, is still going strong.

We don't have a flowering quince bush but Mary does and she's generous enough to share. Thank you, Mary! You can see a tour of her backyard garden retreat here.

Hellebores, Primroses, Periwinkle and a Cherry Blossom Wreath

Happy floral Friday and welcome to the first "this week in my Maryland garden" post for 2016! This is the first week I've had enough flowers in the yard for posting. The hellebores have been blooming for a while but until this week they've been the only flowers in our yard. Most hellebore flowers droop downwards. I propped this one up with a lilac branch so you can see the pretty hellebore face.

The first primroses of 2016 are blooming. Just two so far but more have buds.

Pretty purple-blue periwinkle (also called vinca) is also popping up here and there.

Here's an artsy take on the burgundy hellebore flower.

These are artificial flowers but they remind me of spring and I love cherry blossoms. It's my favorite front door wreath so far. Sorry it's through the screen door but you get the general idea.

Day Lilies, Carnations, Pansies, Primrose & Fire Poker Lily

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Our Stella d'oro day lilies (a repeat blooming variety) have started flowering. I love that we get a big rush of blooms now and they'll trickle in through frost.

This is our first carnation ever. I planted them last spring but only two of the four plants survived. Neither bloomed last year but I'm thankful that now they are both blooming. The flowers are much smaller than florist's carnations but it's neat to have our very own.

My husband warned me that he's taking the pansies out this weekend so this is my last pansy photo until fall. I'm glad he gave me advance notice so I could get this shot with raindrops on the petals.

I'm really loving the yellow primroses (thank you, Mary!). I know I shared a photo last week but this week's has raindrops on the petals so hope you agree it's worth posting again.

Apparently it's been three years since I posted a fire poker lily photo! I believe they're also called torch lilies. My photo from three years ago was actually better (because the flowers were fresher) but I thought it'd be nice to have a new one and this is likely the last week to get a photo. All in all, it's a lovely time in my Maryland garden.

Primroses, Roses, Begonias, Dahlias and Lobelia

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The yellow primroses that my kind friend Mary gave me last year have multiplied and I'm thrilled. They brighten up a mostly shady part of our yard and are visible from two different windows.

The hot pink and light red roses seem to be doing the best this year and are still covered in beautiful, bright blooms. The Mr. Lincoln rose we planted last year has only produced one flower so far but it was huge and delightfully fragrant.

The yellow nonstop begonias are still going strong and I love their very large flowers (much larger than the traditional begonias we have in another area).

Last week I shared my new yellow and sunset dahlias and mentioned that we also added a burgundy dahlia and here it is. I think the sunset dahlias are my favorite but I love them all.

I debated between sharing this lobelia photo or one of my echinacea photos. The lobelia is thriving in my window boxes and the echinacea just started blooming this week. But I had a much nicer echinacea photo in this blog post and don't think I've shared a lobelia photo before so picked the lobelia. They are more of a true blue in person even though they look kind of purple in this photo.

Raindrops on Irises, Roses, Dahlias and Primroses

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Last week I mentioned that my yellow irises would be blooming soon and, by God's grace, they are now. They're my favorite both because of their color and their lovely scent. I think they look even nicer with raindrops too.

Our rose bushes are full of flowers. I love the heavy bloom when they first start out for the year but appreciate that the roses will continue to produce flowers through fall.

The dahlia tubers that we planted aren't near blooming yet so hubby kindly bought me three smaller dahlias (yellow and sunset shown in this post and burgundy/deep red perhaps in a future post).

The primroses started blooming too. I love their deep pink veins.

This is the sunset dahlia I mentioned above. These flowers are just starting to open.

Pansies, Primroses, Lilacs and an Angelique Tulip

Happy floral Friday! It's another exciting week in my Maryland garden and I hope you'll enjoy this week's flower photos! I'm thrilled that the pansies are still going strong (we planted them last fall).

The first set of primrose flowers have passed but the later bloomers are still going strong. This bright pink petaled and yellow and white centered plant is one of my favorite primroses.

The old fashioned lilacs (pictured above) are in full bloom. The dwarf rebloomers are just starting to flower but bees are enjoying both already.

We still have Angelique tulips in the front yard and they look so full that neighbors have asked if they're miniature peonies.

Primrose, Blind Baby Finch, Angelique Tulip, Baby Bunny and Daffodil

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden"! Because I was under the weather and missed out on posting this week's "wild Wednesday" feature I decided to include some of my yard's wildlife in today's post.

As you can see in the photo above, our primroses are at peak; I love this cheery yellow one.

I'm no expert but I think this is a blind baby yellow finch. The other eye looks even worse than the one you can see in this image and it pokes around for a bit before finding the food hole. I am amazed at this little bird's tenacity and thrilled that we're able to contribute to its well being. It's the first blind bird I've ever noticed at our feeders.

The Angelique tulips are our favorite. The National Arboretum has a much larger collection of them (and theirs are even larger and nicer looking) but it's nice to have a few in our own yard.

Our first rabbit of the year has been feasting on our weeds (and hopefully will stay away from our flowers). We enjoy watching his cuteness hopping around the yard.

This might be the last of our daffodils but, by God's grace, there will be a nice variety of flowers coming throughout the year. Spring has just begun and I sure do appreciate its beauty.

Dew Drops, Bees and Pretty Flowers

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Today's post includes flower photos from two different sessions. One in the cool of the morning while the flowers were still drenched in dew and one in the heat of the afternoon with bright sun and buzzing bees.

It amazes me that the evening primroses do so well because my husband's always pulling them out but I'm glad they are tough because I enjoy their delicate pink and white flowers.

I loved how the bee tipped up the petal of this red coreopsis flower so we can see the pretty underside, which is more of a creamy yellow with red striping.

And this bee enjoyed buzzing from coneflower to coneflower.

I thought this was my most artistic flower photo of the week but I'm not sure whether I like this super close up rose photo or the dewdrop rose photo better. Which do you prefer?
