Bicolor Marigold, Day Lily, Coreopsis, Golden Sundrop and Gladiola Flowers

Glowing post rain bicolor marigold: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I took these photos just after a heavy rain and the flowers almost seemed to glow. The marigolds are starting to fill out nicely and I love the color combo of the bicolor red/orange and gold marigold in the top photo.

Our El Dorado day lilies started blooming this week. I love their deep red detailing.

The red coreopsis featured last week has new blooms but the older ones' petals are fading to white. I like how they look both ways. If I stay on top of deadheading the spent flowers we can have blooms through frost on these amazing plants.

The golden sundrops are already providing food and entertainment for our native golden finches. The birds love the seedy centers of these pretty flowers.

Last year's gladiola photo was nicer but I wanted to include this one to mark their first week blooming in our Maryland garden this year. The sweet peas and echinacea are starting to crowd them out so I was pleasantly surprised to see the gladiola flowers.

That's all for this week's mini garden tour. Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Summer Roses, Golden Sundrops, Dahlia, Joe Pye Weed and Day Lily

Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Happy August too! The weeds are having a field day but thankfully the flowers are still more noticeable.  I think this is one of our "Senior Prom" roses, the first group of rose bushes we planted after we moved here.

Our golden sundrops (also known as heliopsis summer sun) are still going strong and when I'm behind in deadheading them the golden finches feed on them. By God's grace, in late September/early October I plan to stop deadheading them and let them set plenty of seeds for the birds over the winter.

The magic sunrise dahlia is still my favorite this year but all of the dahlias are beautiful.

Two weeks ago I posted a photo of our little Joe pye weed at the budding stage and now it's in full bloom and the bees are enjoying it.

The pretty yellow Stella d'Oro reblooming day lilies are usually our first to flower in the spring and now that most of the big ones are done they've started blooming again, which I definitely appreciate. If we are blessed, they will bloom on and off through first frost. One of my super kind neighbors was getting rid of a clump of them this week so we have a new one to add to our collection (thank you!).

Thank you for joining me. May God bless you this August and always!

Coreopsis, Zinnia, Hydrangea, Dahlia and Golden Sundrop Flower Photos

Bee on red coreopsis: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I had so many "critter on flower" pictures that I'm saving some for the next "wild Wednesday" post so be sure to come back for those. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy today's pretty blooms. The red coreopsis are still going strong and the bees are enjoying the sea of flowers.

I was super excited to see our first giant zinnia bloom. After falling in love with the giant red zinnias at the National Arboretum last year, I bought a seed packet that was supposed to produce only red flowers in hopes of having some of my own. Even though this one is clearly orange (and not red), I love it. Since this flower opened I've seen another from the seed packet with white blooms. I think more than 20 of the seeds sprouted so there are at least 18 more changes for an actual red zinnia.

Last year I don't think our hydrangeas produced any flowers so I was thrilled to see flower heads forming this year. This is our very first bloom of the year (it's just starting to open).

The miniature dahlias I planted earlier this spring are producing another rush of flowers.
Heliopsis (golden sundrops): Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
And the heliopsis plants (also called golden sundrops) are producing a lot of bright yellow flowers which have been atracting golden finches. Usually I deadhead flowers this early in the season but I've been leaving spent blooms on these because I like watching the finches feed on them.

That's all for this week's mini flower garden tour. Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Busy Bees on Beautiful Blooms: Zinnia, Golden Sundrop & 3 Kinds of Echinacea

Bee on purple coneflower: Copyright © by Phyllis Wheeler, August 2014
Happy floral Friday! Welcome to my weekly "This week in my Maryland garden" feature! While reviewing this week's photos, I noticed a theme and thought you might enjoy these close up photos of bees on the blooms. The echinacea (coneflower) seem to be particularly attractive to the bees.

But the zinnias and marigolds draw their fair share too. The zinnia in the photo above looks red but it's actually pink.

I think this is our third year having yellow echinacea. The moth is easier to see in the photo above but the bee is busy digging for pollen at the top of the middle coneflower.

Years ago we had golden sundrops and they flourished until the rabbits discovered how tasty their leaves were. This spring I planted six new ones in an area that I don't often see rabbits. Hopefully they'll remain rabbit free and we and the bees can enjoy their pretty flowers for years to come.

This magenta coneflower doesn't look much different from the regular purple echinacea (top photo in this post) but it's color is much more vivid in person and I love it.

Hope you enjoyed this week's mini photo tour of my Maryland garden! May God bless you!
