Rose, Zinnia, Dahlia, Salvia and Obedient Plant Flowers

Rose with sparkly dewdrops: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" The roses look especially nice with dew or raindrops on their velvety petals.
Multicolored zinnias: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
The zinnias are doing great and I think this little pink one with light green petals around the center is especially cute.
Artistic Sights of Summer dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Dahlia production has slowed so they probably need fertilizer but this pretty yellow and red bicolor dahlia still has a few blooms.
Blue salvia with raindrops: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
This week our blue hummingbird-attracting salvia started blooming. I haven't seen a hummingbird on it yet but we have a few that visit our feeders and I hope they notice these flowers too.
Obedient plants: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
The obedient plants are blooming nicely and often are covered in bees and a scattering of butterflies.

It's a pretty time of the year for Maryland flower gardening and I do love our flowers. Hope you enjoy this week's photos! May God bless you!

Summer Flowers for Shade and Sun

White impatiens in part shade: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
Happy August, floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!"  The pretty white impatiens flowers are brightening a shady area.
Hosta blooming in shade: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
This hosta blooms even in our deepest shade.
Black eyed Susan in part shade: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
This patch of black eyed Susan flowers blooms even under the shady canopy of several trees. It only gets a little filtered light but I think there are just as many blooms as our other black eyed Susan plants in full sun.
Yellow coreopsis in full sun: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
This yellow coreopsis is a volunteer baby of our red coreopsis and thrives in our hottest, full sun flower bed.
Obedient plant in sun: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
This obedient plant is blooming in full sun but we also have some in shady areas that bloom, although not as profusely.
Tiny marigold in part sun: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2016
This tiny bicolor fairy marigold is blooming in part sun.

It's fun to have flowers for both shady and sunny areas. Which is your favorite?

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Chrysanthemum, Obedient Plant, Tithonia, Dahlia and Bachelor Button Bloom Photos

Raindrops on yellow chrysanthemum: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Our first chrysanthemum flowers of the year appeared this week. I love this sunny yellow color.
Bee on obedient plant: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
The obedient plants line our side yard and are attracting many bees. Usually they are also covered in butterflies but this year we haven't seen as many butterflies as usual.
Orange tithonia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
This week also saw our first and second tithonia blooms. These are plants we start from seed every year and we got a late start so it's no surprise that they're late in blooming but the flowers are welcome. Usually they attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds.
Rain drenched dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
I took this photo after a heavy rain and the beautiful dahlia was soaked. I love the varied colors in the dahlia and different shapes of the raindrops.
Bachelor's button with raindrops: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Last week I showed you our miraculous first bachelor button flower but it wasn't the healthiest looking thing so here's a nicer photo. They're small, delicate flowers.

I hope you enjoyed this week's mini photo tour of my Maryland garden! May God bless you!

Which is your favorite photo from this post? Do you grow any of these flowers? Do you save seeds or have any seed saving tips?

My Simplifying Home Journey: Week 8, Day 7 (Wrap up)

Obedient plants abound: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Praise the Lord! I made it through Beginner Beans' eight-week Simplifying Home challenge. While I didn't get as much of the checklist done as I would have liked, by the grace of God, I did see some pleasant improvement in my home (despite weathering a series of health challenges).  I did a lot of clutter clearing and organizing and my targeted spaces are more functional and enjoyable.

One wonderful mental change is taking more time to appreciate my surroundings. This is a lovely time of the year in our Maryland garden. The obedient plants are in full bloom along the fence and bees, butterflies and hummingbirds all love their flowers. This week I was so filled with joy upon seeing a hummingbird flit from one flower to another I clapped my hands together like a little child. I stayed as still as I could (so as not to scare it) end enjoyed the beautiful hummingbird show.

Thank you for joining me and thank you to Trina of Beginner Beans for making her Simplifying Home challenge a free resource. May God bless you and Trina too!

What makes your place feel like home? What one thing could you do this week to make your home more enjoyable, safe or friendly?

Dew Drops, Bees and Pretty Flowers

Dewdrop covered hot pink rose: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Today's post includes flower photos from two different sessions. One in the cool of the morning while the flowers were still drenched in dew and one in the heat of the afternoon with bright sun and buzzing bees.
Dewdrop covered evening primrose: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
It amazes me that the evening primroses do so well because my husband's always pulling them out but I'm glad they are tough because I enjoy their delicate pink and white flowers.
Bee on red coreopsis: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
I loved how the bee tipped up the petal of this red coreopsis flower so we can see the pretty underside, which is more of a creamy yellow with red striping.
Bee on purple coneflower: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
And this bee enjoyed buzzing from coneflower to coneflower.
Artistic rose: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
I thought this was my most artistic flower photo of the week but I'm not sure whether I like this super close up rose photo or the dewdrop rose photo better. Which do you prefer?

Praise the Lord for creating such beautiful flowers and creatures! May He bless and keep you!

Raindrops on Pretty Flowers for Floral Friday

Happy floral Friday dear friends! I took these photos in my yard just after a rainstorm earlier today. Please let me know which you like best. As you can see in the photo above our black eyed Susan flowers are at their peak. I believe they are the official Maryland state flower. They do seem to thrive here, even with our heavy clay soil.

It's a real treat to grow zinnias (and any flower) from seed and even more so when I get to see butterflies enjoying the blooms. Our zinnias and echinacea plants seem to be our top butterfly attracting plants (although the joe pye weed, obedient plants, milkweed, butterfly bushes, cosmos, lantana and some of our other plants all attract them too). God sure has gifted us with many joys on this earth!

A moth enjoying our red and yellow (bicolor) marigolds.

A rare yellow echinacea (coneflower) bloom.

A surprise late blooming day lily makes an appearance. I think it's a baby from one of our larger plants that flowered earlier in the year. That's all for this floral Friday's post. Hope you have a blessed weekend!

Chrysanthemum, Zinnia, Tiny Marigold, Verbena and Flower Arrangement Photos

Golden Chrysanthemums: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Fall has arrived and the chrysanthemums are starting to bloom. It's a beautiful season. Autumn blessings to you and yours!
Little floral arrangement: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Last week's post featured some of the flowers I entered in my local county fair.  I made this arrangement out of some of the survivors (they'd been cut for the fair over a week before I got them back so it's a blessing that any survived at all). I believe the little cup/vase contains: yellow, orange and pink zinnias; yellow chrysanthemums, Mexican bush sage and a caladium leaf.
Sun soaked zinnias: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
The zinnias have been the star of our garden this year. Last year it was dahlias. Will be interesting to see what happens next year.
Teeny tiny orange marigold: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
These are the smallest marigolds I've ever grown. Most are under 1/2" in diameter. They didn't bloom until late in the summer but I'm glad they finally did.
Violet verbena: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
I found this pretty bicolor verbena struggling under the giant red zinnias. I'm sharing the photo to remind myself to mark it so I don't plant zinnias all around it next year.

The garden is winding down but we still have one kind of chrysanthemum that hasn't bloomed yet so you'll get at least one more floral Friday/Maryland garden post this year. Then I hope to sprinkle in photos taken in other gardens this summer to brighten some of our winter Fridays.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Dahlia with Skipper, Unusual Zinnias, Vinca and Dill

Skipper moth on bicolor dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" It's been hot and we've lost some plants but overall the flowers are doing great despite the heat.
Pink puffy zinnia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
I love these puffy, pom pom type zinnias and this pink one is my favorite of the bunch.
Bicolor vinca flower and bud: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
We've got a variety of vina flowers but this was the prettiest of the week.
Yellow dill flowers: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
In the naturalized herb garden we have this volunteer dill and I like its cheerful yellow flowers.
Giant red zinnia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2015
And the giant red zinnias are going strong. Some are nearly five feet tall and need staking. But it's worth the effort for their gorgeous flowers.

Thank you for joining me on this week's mini garden tour! May God bless you!

Flowers, Freeloaders and Funkiness for Floral Friday

Insect on orange tithonia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" I thought "freeloaders" made better title material than "insects" and I love alliteration so hope you got a lift from the title. It's starting to look more autumnal than summery in our garden but we still have some flowers blooming.
Insect on hot pink rose: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
The strawberries and cream rose bush has been overrun by morning glories, obedient plants, evening primrose and now a grasshopper. But we keep pulling the overzealous plants away for this year. I think we'll move it to the main rose garden next spring to give it a better chance.
Funky bicolor dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
This lemon and cream (not the actual name, just what I call it) dahlia is now blessing our living room in a vase with a bunch of similar flowers.
Orange African daisy: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
The African daisies that I managed to keep deadheaded are still blooming.
Funky dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Our uniform looking dahlias seem to be taking a little break but the funky looking ones are going strong. I like their curly petals and varied colors.

Thank you for visiting! May God bless you!

Sunflower, Dahlia, Marigold, Gladiola and Bachelor Button Flowers From My Garden

Cheerful sunflower: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
Happy floral Friday and welcome to "this week in my Maryland garden!" Sunflowers are one of my favorite flowers to see. They're just so cheerful. I use them as a decor feature inside too.
Red, yellow and white dahlia: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
As much as I love sunflowers, I think dahlias are my favorite flowers to grow. You get so many, they keep blooming strongly through frost, and you get some surprises along the way. This is the only dahlia bloom we've had this year with such a flame like center, white tips and pale yellow base petals. Definitely a nice surprise.
Bee on yellow marigold: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
The marigolds are still going strong and the bees appreciate them.
First gladiola: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
I think this is my first gladiola bloom of all time and now we have two plants in bloom. I'm not sure if the third bulb I planted in spring is going to bloom but I hope it does.
First bachelor button: Copyright © Phyllis Wheeler, 2014
The poor bachelor button plants... I started them from seed last year. About seven made it through the hot summer. Then we had a (diseased) giant tree cut down this spring and parts of it landed on them. I thought they were all dead but three managed to spring back to life... only to be eaten all the way to the ground by a mystery animal just when they were in bud (before they bloomed). Finally, this week two of the plants had flowers! I feel like it's a miracle.

Our obedient plants started blooming after I took the photos for this week's post so hopefully next week I'll have a photo of one for you with a lovely butterfly on it.

I hope you enjoyed this week's mini photo tour of my Maryland garden! May God bless you!

Do you have any miracle plants or flowers? I'd love to hear the story behind them!
